. the unfortunate and very tragic incident in connecticut in sandy hook elementary school of course heightened everybody's awareness of what violence can really be all about. and as we have been not only responding, reacting to this national tragedy that i think president obama has adequately described as broken all of our hearts, and in every funeral that has taken place, for those 20 innocent children and six innocent adults in the school districts, and school administrators, we obviously have shared in that very tragic event, all of us. it has touched everybody across this country. san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something about it, including the officials in san

watching chris christie a lot whether it was to do super storm sandy or whether to campaign for mitt romney. there's a lot of question about whether he would get the challenge from the very popular mayor of newark, at least popular in some circles cory booker. >> what's interesting about this is that cory booker put out a web video which is how all the politicians announce these days. he said i'm interested in running for senate. that job isn't actually open at this point. senator frank lautenberg holds that seat, a long-time democrat. he has not telegraphed what he's going to do. when cory booker put out this statement that he was going to run lautenberg said there's a time for politics. it's next year. that's when i'll address it. >> lautenberg is 8 years old. he's in his 80s. he might decide to run. he could be... decide to keep that challenge afloat there. we could either be talking about a democratic primary or booker is very well known. he's got a strong national presence. so this is somebody who could clear the field for the democrats but either way it will be competitive. republican

were hurricane sandy, which actually convinced a lot of people who were on the fence about climate change that the oceans really are rising and can affect us, not just polar bears, and the second big thing was the election. the re-election of obama locked in place the doubling of the gas mileage standards, new rules that are coming out on greenhouse gases, no more offshore oil drilling in new places, things that romney took a different view on. and in california there were three or four big environmental measures as well. voters in san francisco rejected overwhelmingly a measure that would have studied draining hetechi, i think setting back that movement decades, frankly. prop 37, the gm food thing, i think that sets back that movement. you know, they weren't able to make a compelling case to the public, even though they were out-spent, that genetically modified food is harmful to eat. i think that's part of the reason they lost. >> is that a victory for science or a defeat? >> we've been eating genetically modified food for 25 years, and there is not clear published in scientific

black friday and sales slowed in early december. analysts say the lingering effects of hurricane sandy and concerns over the fiscal cliff have put a damper on things battle in terms of people shopping. despite that, projections looking good. sales are expected to be up 4% this year from last year. now, this weekend was a big weekend, thursday through sunday were four of the biggest shopping days of the year. to accommodate those floods of crowds, retailers have extended hours. macy's this year nationwide was open for 48 hours straight to make sure people could come in and get what they needs, and people are spending money. it's estimated people spend over $700 apiece on gifts. in terms of waiting until the last minute, like a lot are, unfortunately i'm in that group, people say the longer think wait the better deals they get. we stee that to be true. we see sales for up to 70% office, every store window seems to have a sale banner in it. people walt until the last minute to come in and get deals for their gifts for the holidays tomorrow. >> we made it easy for you this morning. now you

you for joining us again. christmas will be very difficult for the families of sandy hook victims and the survivors in the newtown, connecticut, community. the sadness so many feel stretches far and wide and it's magnified because of the children's ages. how do we, as a nation, deal with this? >> christmas will never be the same again for those families or that community. those mothers and fathers and grandparents will live with that tragedy for the rest of their lives. i think they eventually -- eventually it will slip from the nation's memory and we will talk about it along the way but eventually as the years come and go it will be a passing memory. it will always be present in the lives of those persons who had to experience it. the christian faith, perhaps, is the one thing that those families can use to help them live through christmas for the rest of their lives and to take day in and day out with the message of christmas that there is a christ who loves us and cares for us and can console us. i think it will be the one thing that will make the difference in their eyes. >> r
